A Career Path To Educate, Uplifting, and Guiding

I plan to pursue a career in education and human services. I am going to become an eighth grade English Language Arts teacher. Then I will go to graduate school to earn a master’s degree in Art Therapy. In August I will begin my career path at Cheyney University, the first Historically Black College/University. I will major in education with a minor in art education.

I am often asked why I want to major in education and teach, while emphasizing the pay isn’t great. I never chose my career based on the salary. I always focused on what I love to do and how I can help others and give back to my community one day. Education has been in my family for 80 plus years. I believe that English is one of the most important classes a child will have to take in their 12 years of schooling. Having a strong foundation and grasp of the language will help them flourish into becoming who they are meant to be. As a teacher, I will play an integral role in their development academically and personally, making sure they know they are great and have a lot to offer this world. With being a teacher I am able to take my career anywhere I go, that means I am able to come back to my community and help the youth flourish and hone in on their talents.

Going to Cheyney University is going to help me reach my goals because that is where I will get my bachelor’s degree and certification to teach, where right out of college I can begin working with a school. The school, Cheyney University, also has a special place in my heart as I am a legacy student and the third person in my family to attend and graduate from the school. The Darelle Revis Foundation Scholarship will help me cover extra expenses to get ready for school and while I am in school. With the help of this scholarship I can solely focus on my studies and achieve my goals.
